Shlomi Ohaion – Supporting our Soldiers from the Beginning

There are many heroes of the Swords of Iron War. One hero has risked his life since the beginning – not in battle – but to ensure that IDF soldiers have food to eat.

As soon as Shlomi Ohaion heard what was happening on Oct. 7, 2023, he stocked his food truck. The next day, he drove to a field near Kibbutz Be’eri and began making meals for soldiers fighting inside. A war veteran himself, Shlomi knew too well the hell of war – having been injured in Lebanon and enduring multiple surgeries and a year of rehabilitation. He has rebuilt his life and dedicated himself since then to make sure IDF soldiers are being cared for.

The first days of the war were rough. There were mortars being fired from Gaza. Multiple times a day – no warning, just a loud BOOM. He continued his work, day after day, making sure the soldiers he saw had the strength to continue.

Today, Shlomi is able to reach even more soldiers, assisted by a group of volunteers from all over Israel. He is not an organization; Shlomi is just a guy who has poured thousands of his own Shekels to buy and prepare food for soldiers. It’s not that the IDF doesn’t feed its troops, but Shlomi is there to greet soldiers coming off the battlefield with fresh food – not army rations. The soldiers gain strength not only from the nourishment, but also the personal touch of Shlomi and his volunteers.

Earlier this year, the 56-year-old Shlomi had a heart attack while doing this work. Thankfully, he was able to get to a hospital, where doctors wanted to perform major surgery. He refused surgery because it would mean not being able to do what he loves most.
